What Is MCP? A Plain Explanation for Executives

In short

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that defines one common way for AI to connect to outside data and tools. Think of it as a universal power plug that fits any system. It helps organizations connect AI to their existing systems without building a separate connector for each one.

What is MCP?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that defines how an AI model reaches data and uses the tools of other systems.

Before a common standard, connecting AI to each system meant writing a custom connector for every pair. With MCP, any system that supports the standard plugs into AI in the same way.

A good picture is a universal power plug, or a USB-C port that many devices share.

Why does MCP matter to an organization?

No need to replace existing systems

Systems you already have can connect to AI through one standard.

Add systems step by step

Start with the most important system, then plug in others later.

Control access in one place

Decide which data the AI can reach, and under whose permissions.

Review use afterward

Data requests that go through the central connector are logged and can be checked.

How does Phak AI use MCP?

Phak AI is built on the MCP standard. A data connector (the MCP Gateway) sits in the platform layer, so any app or system can plug into the central AI brain.

Today it connects to LINE OA, Google Drive, Microsoft 365, email, and Excel/CSV files. ERP, CRM, and accounting systems are connected project by project, starting with read-only access.

The connector enforces role-based access and logs every question. See System integrations for details.

Frequently asked questions

How is MCP different from a regular API?

An API is the specific doorway of one system. MCP is a common standard that wraps those doorways so AI can use them all in the same way, which makes adding a new system easier.

Does our ERP need to support MCP first?

No. The team builds the connector through MCP or a custom API for each project, or you can start with files exported from your ERP.

Once connected through MCP, can AI change data in our systems?

Phak AI starts with read-only access and follows the principle that AI drafts, people decide. Any wider access is agreed together, one step at a time.
